Big “D”

The Ruth Ray and H.L. Hunt Big “D” Gallery: 1918 – 1945

Dallas gains national recognition and faces the challenges of a major metropolitan area.

In this period between World War I and the end of World War II, Dallas matured as a major city and gained the nickname “Big D.” In 1936 the highly successful Texas Centennial Exposition brought national headlines to the city. For the first time in its brief history, Dallas County became nationally significant.

What you’ll find in the Big “D” Gallery:
  • Clyde Barrow’s gun
  • A “flapper” wedding dress, purchased at Neiman Marcus in 1925
  • A banjo used by blues musicians in Deep Ellum
  • Texas Centennial souvenirs
  • The first traffic light in Dallas County
